I continue to admire your humane, fair and often tender take on all kinds of things & folks, esp when not often socially-approved. Plus, you make me guffaw on trains.
I formally invite you to the tractor pull championship on my home of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
It is held in a town called Crapaud ( pron. Crappo, and yes, I'm serious)and one of the more popular events is the lawn tractor time trials, where 1,000cc motorcycle engines have been swapped in.
I think you would enjoy this unique display of our culture.
Yes, we are not all Anne of Green Gables, or Margaret Atwood highbrow literature. And our dirt is red, so your socks get stained a lovely shade of pink after being here.
I loved reading this! I really felt like I was there with you and I love that I got a glimpse at the heart and soul of the people and the event through your eyes.
Thanks Stephanie! You've captured why I celebrate Summernats. I've been once, on its 30th anniversary in CBR and mine; most years I glory in the cruise down Northbourne; and last year I was impressed with the (newish) Fringe. I love the 'Nats for its diversity and contrariness. Like Skywhale and Nick Kyrgios, it enrages some locals because it doesn't match their boring old ideas of what Canberra (and tennis) should be. Hooray for Nick, the 'Nats and Skywhale!
Absolutely. What’s missing from so much of the conversation about car shows like this, is how funny the people are. They’re contrarians absolutely. But they absolutely are the masters of their own image.
the desire of the faux intellectual to look down their nose from their ignorant tower with disgust at people having good fun. it does happen in reverse

This is the kindest comment. Thanks Dean. It honestly means a lot.
Love this comment and agree wholeheartedly!
Events like this are so joyful in their fun, their refusal to be serious and their ability to subvert the dominant paradigm/take the piss.
Love ya work here. How’s the empathy! Writers festival attendees (what’s left of them) really need to take the piss out more readily and more often.
YES I AGREE. Everyone is so deadly serious - many more laughs being had at the Summernats, I'll tell you that.

Oh my god oh my god oh my god. I want to go so badly. There’s so much to unpack here. Genuinely appreciate the tip off.

I’ve fallen down a YouTube hole and am OBSESSED.
Well, you c'mon up to the Island for a visit, and I'll take you around-just message me when you're coming. 🇨🇦😉😃

Sounds like you should come next year...?
I saw your Insta post and it sure looks like fun!
